The guitar workshop is a unique event that celebrates the life of Son House with music, lecture and film. The event consist of the following:
Dan Beaumont talk:
University
of Rochester professor Dan Beaumont will discuss and read excerpts from his
forthcoming book, Preachin' the Blues. This is the first full-length
biography of Son House. It will be published by Oxford University Press.
Professor Beaumont grew up in the Pacific Northwest. After working in Libya in 1981-82, he began study of Arabic. In 1991, obtained a Ph.D. from Princeton in Arabic literature, and came to Rochester the next year. In 2002, Slave of Desire, his study of the Arabian Nights, appeared. Since 2001 he has also taught a course on the blues. In recent years he has published articles on Arabic literature, contemporary American and European literature, and the blues. He has also made several video documentaries, among them, So Much Truth about bluesman Joe Beard, and "Room Tone," a critique of contemporary life. He is presently at work on a biography of the Mississippi Delta bluesman Son House.

Armand Schaubroeck talk:
Brothers Armand and Bruce Schaubroeck run the world famousHouse of Guitars which they started in 1964 by selling guitars out of the basement of their mother's home. In the 1960's Armand ran a place called the Black Candle and would book Son House to perform. As Armand noted: [He] would blow away like a local rock group. They wouldn't have a chance to go on after him. He was center stage. ... He was powerhouse. He was the blues."
Son House Film:
There will be a screening of a rare documentary originally aired locally in the 1970’s. There will also be a discussion with the filmakers ron Mix and Mark Brady.
Fred Vine performance:
As a singer and guitar player, Fred Vine is a familiar name at coffeehousees, festivals and clubs throughout upstate New York. He is a native of Rochester, NY. Fred is primarily a folk blues player. His fingerpicking and bottleneck slide blues are expressive and accomplished. His musical tastes are eclectic. Using a traditional fingerstyle he expands his repertoire to include dazzling arrangements of jazz, ragtime, original and contemporary songs. join Fred as he performs and gives instruction in the classic blues styles of Son House, Robert Johnson, Bukka White and others.
