Guitar Workshop June 8th 11-2PM - The Club @ Water Street

The guitar workshop is a unique event that celebrates the life of Son House with music, lecture and film. The event consistS of the following:

Dick Waterman talk and book signing:

Waterman will be give a talk on Son House as well, display his world famous blues photography as well as signing his book, Between Midnight & Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive. Dick Waterman's first book, Between Midnight & Day: The Last Unpublished Blues Archive contains about 100 of his blues photographs from the Cambridge folk clubs and the Newport Folk Festivals of the 1960s to today.

Waterman moved to Boston in the 1950's to study journalism at Boston University. The dominant music of the era was Folk, but Waterman sought out the Blues. In 1964, he journeyed to Mississippi with friends Phil Spiro and Nick Perls (Perls later formed Yazoo Records, a label dedicated to music preservation). The result of this trip was the re-discovery of Eddie "Son" House, a legendary Blues singer who had vanished from the Delta music scene over 20 years earlier. Waterman acknowledges that finding Son House was the turning point in his life; from there he started Avalon Productions, the first booking agency ever formed solely to represent Blues artists. Within a few years, Dick Waterman was representing Blues acts including Son House, Booker White, Lightnin' Hopkins, "Mississippi" Fred McDowell, Skip James and many others.

Armand Schaubroeck talk:

Brothers Armand and Bruce Schaubroeck run the world famousHouse of Guitars which they started in 1964 by selling guitars out of the basement of their mother's home. In the 1960's Armand ran a place called the Black Candle and would book Son House to perform. As Armand noted: [He] would blow away like a local rock group. They wouldn't have a chance to go on after him. He was center stage. ... He was powerhouse. He was the blues."

Son House Film:

There will be a screening of a rare documentary originally aired on WXXI in the 70’s.

John Mooney performance:

Mooney's most enduring influence on the development of Mooney’s music, the legendary Delta blues singer, Ed "Son" House. Impressed by the 16 year old musician’s talent, Son and John soon became friends. "I wasn't’t aware of what the opportunity meant, but I knew there was nobody better in Delta blues." Mooney cites Son’s heavily rhythmic style having a strong influence on him. In fact, the way Mooney adapts acoustic playing to a modern electric format is one of his most distinctive trademarks.

Ticket Giveaways
Tune in through the month of May as Jazz90.1.'s Big Road Blues, Doc's Juke Joint and WITR's Bad Dog Blues gives away tickets for Hot Blues for the Homeless. In addition we will be featuring music from the bands. Also on June 1st tune in to Bad Dog Blues as Fred Vine performs live in studio at 1:00 PM.

Raffles
During the event there will be several raffles including the following prizes: signed guitars (one signed by Buddy Guy and other the by Sonny Landreth), Dobro guitar signed by John Mooney, limited edition framed poster signed by all the artists, an archival "gelatin-silver" black-and-white print hand-made by the photographer from the original negative which will be matted, framed andsigned.
